Easy-Step Workbook


I always begin my classes by asking, "How many people here are writers?" A few hands (if any) go up. Then I say, "Okay, how many people are talkers?" Of course, all hands are raised. Well, writing is talking on paper. Keeping that in mind will help you get started. Just think of what you are doing as another form of talking. The workbook starts you off by asking you to simply fill in some blanks, but before you know it, your sentences will turn into paragraphs.

Memory Strategies:

One of my students began the course by telling me she did not think she would be successful, because she couldn't remember very much. However, she was thrilled weeks later when she was able to recall many buried memories of her life story. No, we don't use Ginkgo. Rather, through the use of photographs, music, silent reflection, coupled with the memory-provoking exercises in the workbook, all of my students, without exception, have been amazed at what they were able to remember.


"I have always wanted to write, but I lacked the discipline to do anything more than required college papers, or short pieces and journal entries when a "creative urge" struck me. The idea of a novel or memoir was too overwhelming. The question: "How do I begin?" was enough to stop me cold.

Ms. Kafka's course has showed me how to think in terms of "stories" rather than one daunting manuscript. Using the technique of noting transitional life events was an easy first step. From these I have been able to expand on each, and I now can see how they could become the framework of a book.
